James L. Greenstone, Ed.D., J.D.

Dr. Greenstone is in private practice. For over 10 years he served as the Police Psychologist and the Director of the Psychological Services Unit of the Fort Worth Police Department. Prior to his retirement from the Department, he supervised the department's Peer Support Team, was the Coordinator of the Critical Incident Stress Management program and a member of the Department's Hostage and Crisis Negotiation Team. He has been in practice for over thirty-nine years, and has been a police officer for twenty-six years.  Previously, he served with the Dallas County Sheriff’s Department and with the Lancaster, Texas Police Department.  He is certified as a Master Peace Officer, as a Mental Health Peace Officer, and as a Forensic Hypnotist by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education.  He holds police instructor certificates from Texas and several other states.  Currently, he is a Deputy with the Tarrant County Sheriff’s Office. Formerly, he was an Adjunct Professor of Law at the Texas Wesleyan University School of Law and was Lead Hostage and Crisis Negotiations Instructor at the North Central Texas Council of Governments Regional Police Academy. He is a licensed professional counselor, licensed marriage and family therapist, and is a dispute mediator and arbitrator. He holds earned degrees in Clinical Psychology, Education, Criminal Justice and Law. He interned at the Devereux Foundation in Devon, Pennsylvania.

Dr. Greenstone is a member of the graduate and/or undergraduate faculties at Walden University, Capella University, and the University of Phoenix. His appointments include both Clinical and Forensic Psychology, and Criminal Justice.

He is the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Police Crisis Negotiations: an international journal published by Haworth Press, Inc. He is the Senior Editor for the Hostage and Crisis Negotiations Book Program. Dr. Greenstone also edited the Journal of Crisis Negotiations and The International Journal of Police Negotiations and Crisis Management.  These journals were the predecessors of the current publication. Previously, he was the Editor-in-Chief of Emotional First Aid: A Journal of Crisis Intervention.

Dr. Greenstone is a Diplomate in Crisis Intervention from the American Board of Examiners in Crisis Intervention and serves as the current Chairman of that body; a Diplomate in Police Psychology from the Society for Police and Criminal Psychology; a Diplomate in Traumatic Stress from the American Academy of Experts in Traumatic Stress, and a Fellow of the College of The American College of Forensic Examiners.  He is a Practitioner Member of the Academy of Family Mediators / Association for Conflict Resolution.

Dr. Greenstone’s most recent book was published by Haworth Press, Inc. (www.HaworthPress.com) in January 2005, and is entitled, The Elements of Police Hostage and Crisis Negotiations: Critical Incidents and How to Respond to Them. He is the author of multiple other works in the fields of Crisis Intervention, and Dispute Mediation.
