Q1

Research is an important aspect of both psychology and statistics, and this aspect of research explains a great deal of the reason to the fact that to understand psychology, one must also understand statistics. Without statistics, one will not be able to read psychology research articles, which are an important part of the psychology major. Another reason statistics is crucial to the psychology major is because without statistics, it is difficult for a person to conduct research on his/her own, once again, a concept of extreme relation to the psychology major. And thirdly, without statistics, it is difficult for a psychology major to thikn critically and analytically, two actions very necessary to be succesful in the field of research and psychology.

Three reasons why the knowledge of statistics is important for becoming a psychologist are aiding in the ability to read psychology research articles, knowing how to do research of my own, and statistics enables my analytic and critical thinking skills to be prime!

Q2

Three observations or interpretations I could make from my knowledge of statistical concepts based on these data are the relation between number of schools and their percentages of binge drinking cannot be compared against each other due to just 1 school having a total of 1-5% binge drinkers, then 10 schools having a total of 60-65% binge drinkers (the ratios aren't equal), second, how many of the students interviewed actually told the truth about how much they had to drink and what "in a row" meant to them, and finally, what is the grand total of students attending each school and what is the percentage of binge drinkers to non-binge drinkers in the individual communities? Maybe I'm reading too much into the question but hey, its psychology right?!

Being skilled and knowledgeable at statistics is crucial to conducting your own research as a psychologist. 3. Learning statistics develops your analytical and critical thinking abilities.

Q2

1. According to the histogram, the most frequent percentage of college students who binge drink is 46-50%. 2. An inaccuracy that is present is that although the definition of a binge drinker is clearly defined, it may not apply in all cases tested. For example, it states that a male binge drinker is one who consumes 5 drinks in a row. However, depending on the man, one man could easily handle that much to drink and not be affected and not consider it binging, while another man might not be able to handle that much alcohol and defnitely consider it binge drinking. 3. An aspect that adds to the validity of the histogram is that it measured percentages, rather than numbers of students who binge drink. This allows any size school to be compared since the percentage takes the proportion rather than the actual number for comparison.

It is important that i learn Psych Stats so that i will be able to correctly read and interpret charts and other experimental outcomes. Another reason that it is important that i have knowledge of the statistics of Psychology is that it will allow me to be more knowledgeable in how to apply the information recieved from experiments. The data will not just be a series or set of numbers but rather a specific meaning to what one is studying. The third reason that it is important for me to have a strong background in psych stats is that it will help me to be able to explain to others with clear understanding the reasons both for the outcome and also what the information from the experiment actually means.

Q2

The chart was confusing at first but at second glance was easily interpreted. One observation one can make is that the greatest number of colleges reported that they had 30 to 50 % binge drinkers. The highest number of colleges reported that they had at least 46-50% binge drinkers. The graph is almost in the shape of a bell curve which leads one to believe that the information is evenly distributed. 46 - 50 % seems to be the median of the graph as well which also helps to make the numbers look evenly distributed.

There are several reasons why the knowledge of statistics applies to the field of psychology. First, they need to be able to read and interpret other psychologist's data. Secondly, they need statistics in order to perform their own research projects. Last, psycologists need statistics to help advance their reasoning and deduction skills.

Q2

The histogram describing colleges by percent of binge drinkers can draw several different observations or interpretations. One observation is that the highest number (20) of colleges had almost a fifty fifty split between binge drinkers and non-binge drinkers. Another observation is that the curve of the graph is normally distributed or bell-shaped and the results weren't skewed in any one direction; it is perhaps a little skewed left, but just barely. Finally, a third conclusion one could draw from this histogram is the graph's X-axis starts at one percent, but doesn't continue to one-hundred percent. It could be implied that there are no schools with binge drinking percentages over seventy percent or that the experimenter didn't bother to show the last thiry percent of the data.

The knowledge of statistics is important for becoming a psychologist for three reasons. The first is that one must be able to understand statistics in order to read psychology research articles. The field of psychology is based on research findings which are found using statistics. Most classes one will take in the field of psychology will use research findings as examples or to illustrate the issues being discussed. If you cannot understnad the statistics involved, then one cannot completely understand the issue being discussed. A second reason why statistics is important for becoming a psychologist is that one must be able to understand statistics if they themselves are going to do any sort of research. At some point in their school careers, those preparing to become psychologists must do some sort of research, especially in graduate school. A understanding of statistics will also allow one to better analyze research results. A third reason the knowledge of statistics is important for psychology is that it helps to develop ones analytic and critical thinking. If one does research, they must know how to analyze and interpret their data.

1) A reason why statistics is important to psychologists is because psychologists do many research studies. In order to interpret the data, they need to be able to summarize and make their study understandable. Therefore, the data has to be represented in the proper, statistical way so that the public can benefit from their findings. 2) Many psychologist use data from other psychologists. In order to understand the data, they need to have some type of knowledge so they can use it for their situation. Therefore, understanding statics will benefit a psychologist's practice if they can't research for themselves. 3) Now a days, it is very competitive in the real world. Especially in the work place. There are many requirements when trying to become a psychologist and the more knowledge and well rounded a psychologist is, the more opportunites he/she will have for success. Therefore, although stats is a requirement, it is also an advantage to have statistical knowledge.

One observation about this histogram could be that at most colleges, binge drinking occurs in at least 20% of the students. However, something that must be taken into consideration is the fact that some students may not always be honest, thus the results here may not be accurate. Human inconsistency must always be taken into account. One can also observe that from this histogram, that for many students, binge drinking is how they drink most of the time. Q1

Psychologists need an understanding of statistics in order to read the work of other psychologists, to do their own research, and to support their reasoning and intuition. When reviewing the work of others, psychologists must be capable of interpreting statistics and determining the relevance of the statistics to the study. Psychologists use statistical knowledge to analyze data and pull meaningful conclusions from the data during their own research. Statistics are also important in that they support the reasoning and insight of psychologists. When coming from a reputable source, statistics give the research its substance and enhance its acceptability.

Q2

One observation is that the data is skewed to the left. Fewer colleges are at the low percentage end than the high percentage end. Of the 140 colleges in the study, 43 collegeshave 1 to 35 percent of students as binge drinkers, while 97 colleges have 36 to 70 percent of students as binge drinkers. Another observation that can be made is that the frequency distribution is multimodal. There are two high points that are almost equal(36-40% and 46-50% binge drinkers) and a few others that are close in height. Another general observation is that binge drinkers represent a significant portion of many college populations. Binge drinking can be a serious problem for the health of the drinkers themselves. It can also have negative impacts on those who come into contact with binge drinkers.

If you don't understand statistics you can not fully undertand the data that is presented to you. Also, you can not understand how the data can be manipulated to say numerous different things. To know how many different things the same data can cause a psychologist to question all of the data that is presented to them (which is extremely important).f

Q2

the class including 46-50% has the highest frequency, having 19 occurences. The lowest frequecy is between 1-5% binge drinkers, having occurred in 1 college. No colleges included on the histogram have higher than 70% binge drinkers.

Q1

1. Understanding stats is crucial to being able to read psyc. research articles.

2. Understanding stats is crucial to doing research.

3. Understanding stats develops your analytic and critical thinking.

Q2

1. One observation that may be made from this histogram is that approximately 70% of the colleges surveyed have a binge drinking rate higher than 35%.

2. One conclusion I would make from loking at this histogram, is that the majority of college students participate in binge drinking.

3. I am inclined to wonder when this poll was taken. If it was taken right after a major campus event (say New Years Eve, or Spring Break), it is likely that the numbers are higher than they would have been under more normal circumstances.

Q1

Understanding Statistics is important to Psychologists because they need it to conduct experiments. Statistics also come in handy when they need to read the work of other psychologists. Overall, statistics help us predict behaviors or situations.

Q2

The most frequent score for colleges regarding binge drinkers is 46-50%. The smallest frequencies (1 and 4) were for the lowest percentages (1-15%) of binge drinkers. The graph is slightly scewed to the left which suggests that the higher percentages observed higher frequencies.

Q1

In order to form opinions and hypotheses, one must have reliable data to base his or her assumptions on. Multiple tests must be conducted resulting in useful statistics in order to prove that something is true. Psychologists must have an idea as to how reliable their statistics are on a certain subject matter otherwise their beliefs are disputable among any who may contradict.

Q2

close to half of the students at the majority of colleges selected considered themselves to be binge drinkers the graph illustrates close to what is known as the bell curve there was a range of 18 within the results with the exception of a couple of the schools-the results did not deviate much from the mean

Q1

Learning statistics is important to becoming a psychologist because much of psychology is based around statistics. In studying people, you must know how to summarize data- this is a use for statistics. Statistics are used to determine the outcome and the probability of someone acting a certain way, doing a certain thing, etc. Statistics are important because they are a way to summarize scientific observations seen in a patient, which may be used to help another patient in the future.

Q2

In most colleges, the average number of binge drinkers was somewhere between 46% and 50% of the students attending the college. Very few colleges have a low percentage of students who are binge drinkers. In fact, only one college in the survey had as low as 1%-5% of their students who would binge drink. Most often, the number was higher. Most colleges fall in the range of having 26%-65% of their stidents who are binge drinkers.

1. Research helps the psychologist chose which forms of therapy/medication to provide patients given certain conditions based on percentages of success from statistics/experimentation. 2. Understanding stats helps psychologists understand research articles and where data comes from. 3. Stimulates development in analytic and critical thinking.

Q2

1. Binge drinking is a serious problem on most college campuses. 2. The Histogram has a bell-shaped curve meaning that most colleges fall in the middle having a 36-40% of their students as being binge drinkers. 3. Very few colleges had a low percentage of binge drinking, so one can conclude that on average college students, when they dirnk, binge drink.

Q1

Statistics is used to psychology for a number of reasons. Having the knowledge for statistics is important because psychologists 1. have to know how to collect data that is appropriate for what they are studying 2. know how to interpret that data using statistics 3. know how to comparre and contrast the variable that are involved.

Q2

The histogram on page 27 is 1. skewed to the left, which shows that among the colleges involved, most were at the high end of percentage of binge drinkers, 2. the chart is incorrect in that is skips the 6-10% of binge drinkers, and 3. this chart is multimodal.

Q1

1)Statistics is especially useful when a psychologist is performing research studies. One example, is when a psychologist will need to determine what test to perform (t-test, z-test etc)when conducting a study. 2)A psychologist also needs to know how to interpret statistical studies when reading research results and/or APA summeries. 3)Finally, a psychologist may need to explain to a patient or a co-worker what a test means. Therefore, he or she will need to know the appropriate terms and procedures to appropriately convey the results of a test.

Q2

1)The median percentage shown in this histogram is 36-40. 2)Only one college has between 1-5% binge drinkers. 3)The mode observed for the number of colleges is 6.

Q2

1. The histogram appears to be bimodal. 2. The histogram appears to be skewed to the left, or lower end of percentage of binge drinkers. 3. You cannot compare the distributions of the bars due to their being unequal (for a total of 1 college the percentage of binge drinkers is 1 to 5%; however, for the total of 10 schools the percentage of binge drinkers is 60 to 65%. You cannot group together 10 colleges and compare it to 1 college.)
